Woman robbed in Austin Bank drive-thru expected to survive injuries

JACKSONVILLE (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A woman robbed on Friday in the drive-thru area at an Austin Bank in Jacksonville is expected to survive her injuries.

The 66-year-old woman, whose name is not being released, was up Monday sitting in a chair and talking, Jacksonville police Detective Greg Compton said.

The woman was shot in the shoulder about 5:30 p.m. Friday and taken by ambulance to East Texas Medical Center in Jacksonville, and then flown to ETMC in Tyler, City Manager Mo Raissi has said.

The robbery took place at the drive-thru location in the 100 block of West Commerce Street.

The woman, a bank patron, was preparing to make a deposit when someone approached her car on the driver's side and demanded money.

The woman refused to hand the money over and was then shot, Raissi said Friday.

According to a news release, she was shot without provocation or warning. The robber then fled the scene.

Witnesses described the robber as a black male wearing a red jacket.
Compton said detectives are working on a photo lineup for witnesses to help positively identify the shooter and are still running down leads.

They also will review Austin Bank video and other surrounding businesses, according to a news release.

"We are making progress in the investigation and are linking the pieces together," Compton said, adding that law enforcement officials are looking at multiple individuals they believe are involved.

Detectives anticipate the arrest of suspects in the near future, Compton said.

The shooting is being investigated by Jacksonville police, the Tyler FBI office and the East Texas Safe Streets Gang Taskforce.

The FBI and Cherokee County Crime Stoppers are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and the conviction of the suspects.

Compton said authorities strongly encourage people to continue calling with any information they have about the crime.
