Wood County Vehicle Pursuit Leads to Officer Involved Shooting

WOOD COUNTY (KYTX)- On June 16, 2014 at approximately 4 p.m., Wood County Sheriff's Office Dispatch received a complaint of criminal trespass located on North Hwy 37 between Quitman and Winnsboro.

The caller reported a white male identified as Landon Benson was trying to kick the door in to gain entry into the residence. The caller stated Mr. Benson was unable to gain entry and had fired a shot into a building at the residence.

Wood County Deputy Steven Fields was dispatched and located the suspect and attempted to detain him. The suspect fled in a vehicle and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended after the suspect rammed Deputy Fields' patrol car. The suspect was wounded and then was air lifted to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler where his condition is reported to be stable.

Texas Ranger John Vance is working the officer involved shooting with the assistance of Hopkins County as well as Tyler Police Department. Several grams of methamphetamine, as well as drug paraphernalia, was located on the suspect and in the suspect's vehicle.

Sheriff Jim Brown stated that felony charges have been filed by Tyler P.D. and others by Hopkins and Wood County are expected to follow.
