Worst jobs of 2014

TYLER (KYTX) - A new report from Career Cast shows the top 10 worst jobs of 2014. They range from lumberjack to corrections officer. Stress, physical demands, low pay and more put these jobs on the list.

Long hours on your feet, odd work schedules and demanding customers are what put cooks on this year's list of top ten worst jobs.

"It's very labor intensive. And so, there's a lot of work to be done."

Lago del Pino restaurant manager Melvin Gregory has been in the restaurant business for 20 years. He says this line of work requires a different type of person.

"They're very passionate about their work and they take a lot of pride in the product they produce."

"Sounds like news!"

"Yeah, definitely. I think reporters, definitely they take a lot of pride in what they do and people don't actually realize how many hours they put in."
Speaking of news. print reporters came in at number two on the list and broadcasters came in at number five for high stress and little pay. I asked my friend and coworker Field Sutton what's kept in the business for the past eight years.

"It's a job where you get to do something different everyday. You're not just in some kind of rut because it's always something new. So, with that, plus the fact that you get to craft something and have this daily reminder that you have a product that you can basically see and hold onto. It's great!"
He says the positives outweigh the negatives, and the stress is what keeps the day exciting.

"It's something that I, I feed off of."

Moving along to the number eight worst job of 2014, garbage collectors.

"It's rain or shine, those types of circumstances. They're getting the heat. They're getting wet." says Russ Jackson, City of Tyler director of solid waste.

He says their work may be physically demanding, but they take pride in it.

"A lot of them, they do extra things, go above and beyond helping people with things in the community."

It's a tough job but somebody's gotta do it.

"I think it's interesting because a lot of jobs on the list are things that maybe get a bad wrap, but when you actually get into them and enjoy them, it's something that maybe they don't deserve to have a spot on that list." says Sutton.

Flight attendants, firefighters, and taxi drivers also made the top 10 worst jobs of 2014.
The list is based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, Trade Association Studies and other sources.
