JT Ready For Elite Competition In 7-on-7 Tournament

JT Getting Ready for Elite 7-on-7 Tournament

TYLER - The John Tyler football team didn't make the 7-on-7 state tournament this year. And while that signaled the end of summer games for most teams, the story is a little different for the Lions.

They've been invited to play in a USA Football 7-on-7 tournament this weekend in Frisco. And this tournament features some of the top teams from around the region.

Lions junior quarterback Devlen Woods says, "Not making it to state it was kind of frustrating for us and now we have a chip on our shoulder and now were going and competing against people out of state, so it's a bigger chance, a bigger opportunity."

Woods is one of the quarterbacks the Lions are turning to as they try to replace Bryson Smith. And they hope all of these extra practices and games will go a long way to helping this team make another deep playoff run in the fall.

JT senior wide receiver Jaivon Williams says, "It's going to be a whole different ballgame than what we've seen last year. We're building the chemistry and the defense is getting ready...I think people think we're not going to be as good as last year but we've got something coming for them."

Here is the Lions schedule for Friday's pool play games (all games at B.F. Phillips Park in Frisco):

Game 1 - 9:30 AM - JT vs. Cedar Hill (TX)
Game 2 - 10:30 AM - JT vs. Mill Valley (KS)
Game 3 - 11:30 AM - JT vs. Union (OK)
Game 4 - 1:00 PM - JT vs. Lone Star (TX)
Game 5 - 2:00 PM - JT vs. Bryant (AR)
Game 6 - 3:00 PM - JT vs. Westbury (TX)
Game 7 - 4:00 PM - JT vs. Evangel Christian (LA)

The tournament will continue Saturday with a 16 team championship bracket.
