July 12th Is Now "Whitney Simmons Day" In Tyler

Tyler Declares July 12 as "Whitney Simmons Day"

TYLER - Whitney Simmons is arguably the best athlete in UT Tyler's history. She's a 3-time national champion, a 7-time All-American, and she currently holds the NCAA D3 national hammer throw record.

On Wednesday, she received another honor that very few athletes get. Tyler Mayor Martin Heines declared July 12th as "Whitney Simmons Day" in the city of Tyler.

Simmons says, "I really appreciate it. I know that it's not just for me but it kind of shows my family and my coaches some respect as well and I absolutely love that because I couldn't have done that by myself."

Simmons graduated from UT Tyler in the spring and now she's pondering her next move. Her best throws are only a few meters short of the qualifying distance to go to the U.S. Olympic Trials. Knowing that, she says that Tokyo in 2020 could be a possibility.

Simmons says, "I am very motivated...I didn't think I had what it took to do what I've done so I kind of have that same attitude about the Olympics. I don't know if I have what it takes to get it done but I've got this done so far so I don't think I should limit myself at all."
