Gillian Sheridan was born in England and immigrated to the United States as a young girl with her family. At the age of 12, she became an American citizen. After growing up in Minnesota, Gillian earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota double majoring in journalism and telecommunications. After years of moving around, she now calls East Texas home.
Her career in broadcasting has spanned more than 21 years including on-air positions in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Texas. Almost 13 years ago, she moved to East Texas and is most excited about her recent addition to the KYTX CBS19 News team. You can see her weeknights at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Gillian has been recognized with numerous broadcasting awards including: 2008 Emmy nomination for "Best Human Interest Story," 2008 Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Evening Newscast," 2007 Emmy for "Outstanding Evening Newscast," 2006 Emmy for "Best Human Interest-Series" and 2005 Emmy for "Outstanding Evening Newscast." The Associated Press has awarded her "Best Hard News Story," "Best Spot News Story," "Best Feature Length Documentary," "Best Mini-documentary/Series" and "Best Feature Story." She has also been awarded "Best Anchor" by the Texas Associated Press and been honored several times as "Best Newscaster" in a poll of East Texas viewers.
Gillian is very passionate about helping foster children and continues her work in the community to help find them a forever family. In 2009, she is assisting Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler create and implement an adoption ministry called "Hope For 100." She has been humbled with many honors for her years of commitment to helping foster children including: "Ambassador of Purpose Award" from the Arrow Child & Family Ministries, "Outstanding Media Award" from the Region IV Child Welfare Board, "Community Change" award by the Tyler Ministerial Alliance, "Community Leader Award" from the Tyler Association for Education of Young Children, the "Datie Florence Brown Memorial Children's Award" and the "First Lady Award" from Beta Sigma Phi. She was also named "Public Citizen of the Year" for Northeast Texas and "Tyler Woman of Distinction." For 14 years, she enjoyed hosting telethons benefiting children including the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Children's Miracle Network.
Gillian spends most of her free time helping others in the community and believes sincerely in giving back. She serves on the boards of the Children's Advocacy Center of Smith County and the Junior League of Tyler. She also volunteers for the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Tyler Junior College and Leadership Tyler. In addition, she is a charter member of The Women's Fund. Gillian also enjoys emceeing many local events benefiting area non-profit organizations. Plus, she speaks to civic organizations and students.
When Gillian isn't giving of her time, she's spending it with her husband, James. They enjoy gardening, sporting activities, attending theatre and musical shows and playing with their cat, Phoebe. They attend Green Acres Baptist Church.
Gillian and her husband James recently adopted two baby girls. They are four months apart: Gwyneth Grace and Elizabeth Claire. The girls have been a huge blessing in their lives and have been an answer to prayer for a family.
