The recent incidents at John Tyler High School has many parents questioning what's going on in their children's lives. While some parents blame a lack of security for violence in schools, some say school districts can't be held responsible.
For Jake and Amanda Carney, a day at the park with their one-year-old daughter is not unusual.
The parents of three, with a little one on the way, believe a daily presence in their children's lives is essential.
"The family is the essential unit of our society, if that breaks down, our society will break down," Amanda Carney told CBS 19.
After hearing of the recent events at John Tyler High School, the Carneys' are not placing blame on the school district, rather a society that has become complacent in parenting.
"A lot of problems we see today in schools, high schools, and as adults is that they go through their whole childhood and they never get consequences for their actions," said Jake Carney, "They think they can get away with anything," added Carney.
Mary Thrasher with Parents Anonymous said there is no excuses when it comes to getting involved in your child's life.
"Just listening to your children, just spending that quality time, even five minutes on a Saturday afternoon can make a difference," explained Mary Thrasher, Parents Anonymous.
The Carneys' make no excuses when it comes to raising their kids.
"What do I need to cut out, and what do I need to change, I can't expect them to be anymore than I am," said Amanda Carney.
Because they know at the end of they day, they're accountable for their children's actions.
"It's nobody else's job and the way these people turn out and the values they hold is your responsibility at the end of the day," commented Jake Carney.
If you've noticed that your child has become angry or started lashing out at those around them, experts said to take a look at your own actions. Do you yell and lash out at those around you? Children normally pattern their parent's behavior.
