The University of Texas will soon be bringing an admissions center to Longview. The president, Dr. Bill Powers said this center will help ease the admission process for prospective UT Austin students. By opening a center in Longivew, more students will access to the resources they need to apply to U.T.
High school junior Denie Burns, has a pretty hectic schedule. "I made head cheerleader, vice president of our student council, president of my class," she said.
Activities Burns hopes will increase her chances of getting into the University of Texas at Austin. "Not a lot of my family has been very successful about going to college and stuff, but I know that was one of my goals as a child," said Burns. "And I'm trying hard to accomplish that."
To do that she has been diligent with her schoolwork. "I stay on top of my grades because I'm trying to be of my valedictorian class," said the junior. "So I'm making sure I stay on top of those."
And the application process is a challenge. UT president Dr. Bill Powers is changing that. "Helping students from their and sophomore junior year on and what it takes with financial aide and them with their applications," said Powers.
UT is opening up an admissions center so counselors can work with students first hand. "Students need to have the information how to go about getting talented students into the university," added Powers. "The idea is to get increased representation."
Burns plans on being the first one through the doors once Longview's center opens, " I can't wait."
President Powers said he wants the center to be off of loop 281 and he expects it to open sometime in early 2010.
