TYLER (KYTX) - The TEA's list of under-performing schools is out, and several East Texas schools are on the list.
Find the full list of TEA's under-performing schools here.
Two of East Texas' largest school districts - the Tyler ISD and Longview ISD - have a total of seven schools on the list.
In the Longview ISD, those schools are Forest Park Magnet, Judson Middle, Valley View Elementary, and Ware Elementary Schools.
In the Tyler ISD, those schools are Dogan, Hogg, and Stewart Middle Schools.
In all, there are 499 schools on the public education grant, or PEG, list. The 'unacceptable' ratings mean 50% or more of the students failed the taks test in two out of the past three years.
We spoke with Suzanne Marchman, the spokesperson for the Texas Education Agency. She told us that under-performing schools are required to let parents know that their schools made the PEG list.
"Parents are to be notified by February first, by their school, that it's been placed on the PEG list. They're also to be notified that they may transfer their student to another school within the district or they may request a transfer to another neighboring school district," said Marchman.
The TEA says this law is in place to provide students with an opportunity to attend a school that is achieving academically. One important note, however - if you choose to take your child out of an under-performing school, there is no funding for transfers, and you must pay for transportation to the new school.
