"Keep Kids in School" campaign kick-off

TYLER (KYTX) - Students thinking about playing hooky in the Tyler ISD schools have a new reason to think again. Three Tyler powerhouses...Tyler ISD, Tyler Police and the City of Tyler are launching a new campaign to keep students in school. CBS19's Amanda Roberson explains the importance of the campaign and how you are being asked to help.

The campaign is called "Keep Students in School" and Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass said the goal is to help students achieve success after graduation.

"It is all about trying to give our young people the best start in life they can," Mayor Bass explained. "And that means a top-notch quality education, and that means keeping them in school to make that happen."

TISD Superintendent Randy Reid said the district is doing it's best to keep students in the classroom, but it will take everyone's help.

"As the old adage goes it takes a village and everyone in our community has to help us with keeping our children in school," said Reid.

Posters, flyers and business cards will be posted around the city, asking for your help.

When attendance rises, Tyler Police Chief Gary Swindle said crime goes down.

"We know for a fact it's directly related to a lot of juveniles being out of school and being involved during the day when these crimes and burglaries happen, when auto thefts happen, when people's items come up missing," Chief Swindle added.

If you spot a student off campus during school hours without adult supervision, you're asked to call Tyler Police at 903-531-1000 or Tyler ISD Police at 903-262-1111. You will be asked for a description of the student(s) and their location.
