TYLER (KYTX) - Visiting the doctor can be expensive, and when you're prescribed medicine, that's an added cost. CBS 19's Hayley Wielgus tells us how an East Texas pharmacy is helping you get some prescription antibiotics for free.

Troup resident Serena Prince is a regular customer at Super 1 Foods Discount Pharmacy.

"I use them for everything if I can. I get discount generics, some things I can't but when I can, I like that."

A new program caught her eye while she was picking up her prescriptions, and she spread the word to her friends.

"I was telling them I noticed something in Super 1 where you can get free antibiotics and this girl said, I just had to buy some, I need to start using Super 1."

In addition to discount generics, the pharmacy is now offering nearly 10 antibiotics for free.

"We had all of these on our $3.99 program. Because of rising medical costs, we wanted to help our customers even more."

Pharmacist Phil Clark says the program is especially helpful for families who all come down with the same illness at once, and are prescribed antibiotics by their doctor.

"A family of five that used to have to buy five antibiotics prescriptions pay a lot of out pocket can [now] get a lot of those for free."

The program is open to everyone, and there's no need to sign up. Just bring in a valid prescription from your doctor.

"It's something people have to have. They don't have a choice, they don't have time to look around."

Prince says the program comes at a great time for many East Texans who are struggling to make ends meet, while keeping their families healthy.

At this time, the program doesn't have an end date, but it's expected to at least last for the next several months.
