Dogan Middle School has struggled with meeting federal mathematics standards for the last four years. The school has faced more sanctions with each year of failure.
Despite Tyler ISD's efforts to help, Dogan just can't reach the rising standards. "We have to get all those things in place and have plans in place as they move through the various stages of intervention," said Kim Tunnell Curriculum and Development for Tyler ISD.
So even if Dogan students matched the math standard from last year exactly on this year's test they'd still be failing and facing the next level of sanctions. "The bar continues to rise, so it's not like there's a set bar. It continues to go up each year so you not only have to make gains to that minimum level, but you have to make the additional as well," explained Tunnel.
Superintendent Doctor Randy Reid is positive about the school's potential, but still planning for the possibility of failure. "We have every hope that we're going to see progress, but we have to make come contingency plans just in case they don't," explained Reid.
If the campus fails the federal math standard again this year, the school will have stage 4 sanctions meaning the district will have to come up with a plan to restructure the school.
Options:
- Turn school over to the State
- Contract a private firm to operate the school
- Change campus to a charter school
- Replace all or most of the staff tied to the failed Federal Standards
Failing again after stage 4 means stage 5 where the district would have to implement one of those options.
