In an effort to improve student performance on standardized tests, earlier Monday evening the Tyler ISD board of trustees approved a partnership with the University of Texas at Tyler.
The partnership will launch innovative programs at three of the district's middle schools.
The Tyler school district plans to implement these new programs at Boulter, Dogan and Stewart middle schools. These are schools that have had some struggles in terms of math and science performances and district officials are hoping that the programs will help turn the tide.
At Boulter they plan to implement a pre-engineering program campuswide.
The programs at Dogan and Stewart will not be engineering focused, but students will engage in more project-based activities.
Student-teachers from UT Tyler will partner with TISD teachers at some of those schools to give more support.
District officials say it won't cost much. The district and UT Tyler will use grant funds to pay for several aspects of the project. They are estimating they will need to buy about $36,000 worth of student computers and pay half of the cost of additional personnel.
