Three historic, black East Texas colleges. All three in need of major repairs. Repairing the schools could happen easily, if each wins a national competition. CBS 19's Anthony Austin explains how they plan to renovate and why they need your help.
This historic home sits at the front entrance of Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins.
"This is a structure that is important to the history of our campus," said Dr. William Smialek.
But for many decades, this home of former college presidents' has sat vacant.
"As people come down Highway 80, they get not only Jarvis history, but East Texas history," said Smialek.
Vice president, Dr. William Smialek wants to see this home restored to its former glory. However, the private school doesn't have the money to do it.
"Most of our money comes from the Christian church and they try to help, but they can't give us everything," said D'Andri Choice.
That's where the "Re-tool your School" campus improvement program steps in. More than 60 historic black colleges and universities, including Jarvis, are competing for $150,000 in funding for on-campus improvements.
Texas College in Tyler is also a finalist. The college is in need of wheelchair ramps for its handicapped students.
"We're trying to make it easily accessible for them," said Anthony Meyers.
Vice President Anthony Meyers would also like to see these buildings dated back to the early 1900's updated. Meyers believes better facilities will bring more students to the North Tyler campus.
"We have to know who our clientele is going to be and our clients is everybody. So, we don't want to be exclusive, we want to be inclusive in what we have," Said Meyers.
Two colleges in need of help…
"This money for our school will mean a new beginning," said Choice.
and new opportunities for future students.
