Local students prep for last year of TAKS tests

CHAPEL HILL (KYTX) - TAKS testing begins Tuesday for many students across the state. CBS 19's Jennifer Heathcock reports on how school districts are gearing students up for the test, and what parents can do to help.

Before each class takes off for the day, Melanie Little is reminding students about the TAKS test. "TAKs on 10th and 11th grade students doesn't just test subjects being taught - we have to make sure we cover all the bases."

For these sophomores, that means more than just science - it's also about test-taking strategies. "We get a lot of TAKS packets. We're going over everything we think might be on the test to get ready in all the classes," said one student.

"I just feel like I'm ready, and my friends are ready," said another.

Students have been marking up papers and taking extra tutorials for months - classroom curriculum, TAKS based classes, and even homework for the students and parents the night before. "Every night you have homework. Tonight: go to bed on time."

So these students can take what they learned here, and put it to work for them on the test. "I'm ready for it to be over with."

Testing continues through the week for high schoolers, including math, science and reading. This is the last year for TAKS testing.
