The Tyler ISD rolled out its plan for a 137 million dollar budget for next year. That is about 500,000 dollars more than the budget from 2009-2010.

It's still months before the school board will approve the final budget. The main thing that the district discussed Monday was that it doesn't plan to cut back the number of teachers or staff.

From reports across the state, that's a pretty rare decision. There's about an $18 billion shortfall at the state level in terms of funding for school districts, so a lot of those districts are having to offset that lost money by laying off teachers. But it looks like students will still have the same educational resources and number of teachers here next year.

It's possible teachers might have to pay more for health insurance premiums as early as next year, maybe even an extra $40 a month. That's not because of anything the district might do. It would actually be due to the federal health care act that would require the school district to make health insurance available to all full time staff.

Right now, there's a pretty sizeable portion of employees who don't buy into the district's health care plans. If they're required to carry coverage, that could drive up premiums for everyone.
