New security measures are coming soon to John Tyler.
The Tyler ISD Board approved installing "ornamental fencing" – which would be a wrought iron fence with brick columns and gates as well as fixing up and adding to an existing fence in the back of the school.
This is all in an effort to keep students on campus and unwanted visitors off campus. Security recommendations such as this were made in the wake of last fall's fatal stabbing of a John Tyler teacher. The district is also looking at security measures for Robert E. Lee High School.
Also, during the board's regular "campus spotlight" time at the meeting, John Tyler officials presented plans for a dress code that would basically require some combination of solid-colored clothing – whether you're talking about pants or skirts or shirts. They want to meet with more parents to discuss the standardized dress idea, although they've already gotten some feedback through surveys from parents and students and staff.
There were also ideas presented about starting a ninth grade academy at John Tyler and hiring an extra truancy officer to specifically handle ninth graders.
