TSTC to receive millions in grant money

MARSHALL (KYTX) - Texas State Technical College is set to receive an $8.2 million grant from the city of Marshall. CBS 19's ShaVonne Herndon reports on how the school will use the funds and how students will benefit from it.

Cathy Fontaine never thought she would be starting her life all over.

"I was a Delta flight attendant for 26 years."

After Delta merged with another airline, Fontaine decided to enroll at Texas State Technical College to pick up computer skills. "We learned applications, different ones and help a user with that and help them with printer, or whatever it is."

The city of Marshall passed a bond in 1992, and now TSTC is set to capitalize on more than $8 million. "We are seeing stuff in terms of computers and biomedical engineering and support in those kinds of things."

Bill Marshall with the Marshall Economic Development Corporation says this is a great investment in the future of East Texas' Work Force.

"The skill sets that TSTC offers to help these companies grow and develop and it helps the economic well being of Marshall," said Marshall.

Skills Janelle Manning of Marshall is prepared to utilize locally. "The two year degree, it's good as well. You get a chance to have the hands on experience and if I choose to go to a four-year school, I'm equipped to excel there as well."

Meanwhile, Fontaine pursues her second degree. "I have started a multimedia degree to enhance the desktop support."

Back in 1992, TSTC started with thirty students. Now, enrollment is up to more than 1,000, according to Community College Week Magazine. The school is the fastest growing two-year college in Texas.
