Four Tyler ISD schools and the district as a whole did not meet federal education standards this year.

The U.S. Department of Education today released its annual evaluations of school districts and campuses nationwide. Districts, campuses and states must meet federal criteria in three areas: reading/language arts; math; and either the graduation rate or the attendance rate.

Bell Elementary, Boulter Middle School and Robert E. Lee and John Tyler high schools failed to meet the standard, which is known as Adequate Yearly Progress. The primary reason why these schools and the district missed the mark is because of student performance among special education students, particularly at the high school level.

Those schools that receive federal funds for having high populations of poor students can face sanctions if they fail to meet these federal standards for two years in a row. Dogan Middle School was already in Stage 3 of sanctions because of not reaching the standard in math in the past. But, they met the standard this year and avoided moving to Stage 4, which would have meant a restructuring of the school.
