10,000 athletes and spectators are braving the Central Texas heat this weekend at the Games of Texas in Waco.
The event is expected to bring in millions of dollars to the city. From archery to track, this Olympic-style competition attracts athletes of all ages from across the state.
Opening ceremonies kicked off Friday night in downtown Waco with a parade of athletes. Competitors then filled Indian Spring Park for a fireworks show that lit up the nighttime sky.
Thousands of people will be eating in local restaurants and staying in hotels here through Sunday and that is expected to bring in about $2.5 million to the local economy.
It is a great time for a city that is happy to host the Games of Texas and for its athletes, that have trained all year to bring home the gold. "It's pretty crazy," says 8-year-old Sawyer Chandler of Dripping Springs, "but I know that my friends are here and they're here to guide me."
Allen athlete, Collins Ateku, secured the silver medal in the 18 and under triple jump competition Friday. "The best part is when you come out here and you try your best," he says, "and you prove to yourself that you can do it and you made it where you want to be."
Driving in from Mart, Jennifer Bryant is here to support her athlete son and coach daughter. "No matter what sport you enjoy," she says, "it gives the community something to see these little kids and what they all can endure over the summer…in this heat!"
There are still two more full days of competition. For a schedule of events and venues, click here.
