Iron fence surrounds John Tyler High School campus

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - When John Tyler students start school in just a couple of weeks, they'll be greeted by a wrought iron fence. The nearly $250,000 project was prompted by the stabbing death of a JT teacher last September. CBS 19's Anthony Austin is live at John Tyler with the district's safety plans for the future.

The fence wraps around the entire John Tyler campus, which is about 90 acres. The fence was installed as the result of the fatal stabbing of teacher Todd Henry last year. However, the fence is only the beginning of new security measures to come.

Black, wrought iron bars stand tall on the John Tyler High School campus. It's the latest effort to secure a school that has been bombarded with controversy.

"What it is preventing is unauthorized student traffic...whether that's students leaving campus or entering the campus." The gate's purpose is to keep students in and unwanted visitors out. However, some John Tyler students are questioning the purpose of the fence.

"I think they put that fence up because of the killing...and the killing happened inside the school...not outside the school."

Student Ashley Harvey believes the gate is just a waste of time and money. "Everybody know it happened inside with a student and a teacher, so why they trying to close us in?"

"In a safety and security audit, you identify a number of ways that would deal with safety and security whether that's inside or outside.  This is something that will keep a safe and controlled learning environment on campus."

The new gate is only the beginning of possible security changes within the district. The school board is considering the addition of two safety officers. That would put three officers on John Tyler's campus, and three at Robert E. Lee High School. The district is also considering adding Raptor software to its middle schools. The software is  already installed on elementary campuses to check the backgrounds of school visitors. More metal detectors, increased drug dog visits, and more security cameras on school campuses are also possibilities.

"We're always examining our safety and security measures...not only to protect our students but our staff as well."

Besides the installation of the fence, a dress code will be enforced at JT. Also, students may have to walk through metal detectors at times during the school year. A similar security gate  will be installed at Robert E. Lee High School. Right now, it's in the planning phase.

TISD says traffic flow will remain the same this school year, even with the new fence.
