TISD Convocation kicks off the new school year

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Teachers in Tyler ISD are looking for new ways to help your student learn this school year - and make the district recognized with the state. CBS 19's Jennifer Heathcock has more on what they're doing to prepare before the bell rings Monday.

With a little magic and laughter, Tyler ISD's convocation kicked off, to get more than 2,500 teachers and staff back in the game before students are back in their seats. "We get to come together as a whole community of teachers and school district employees that we have one purpose: to educate our children and give the best education we can," said Caldwell Elementary librarian Teresa Garrett.

"This is just an absolutely amazing experience. Just one big happy family." But teachers like Abbey Martindale were also reminded of  work that needs to be done this coming year. "I really hope I can get a little push in science to get us there and I'm crossing my fingers."

Martindale hopes her energy can help her 8th grade science students achieve that goal. "This is what I love to do and I just want to instill that passion for learning I have to my students."

Seeing education through the eyes of students...and hoping for a successful school year. "You have a great impact that you don't realize they carry on throughout the years."

TISD had 13 state-recognized campuses this year, and two exemplary. It missed a recognized rating for the entire district by three points.
