Some overbooked colleges putting students up in hotels

Posted: Updated:

MARSHALL (KYTX) - Wiley College in Marshall has more students enrolled than at any other time in school history. Hundreds of them are being forced to live in hotels. CBS 19's ShaVonne Herndon reports on how long this will have to continue and what the solution will be.

No making up the bed here for Tyler Jones. "It's better than the dorms."

The Wiley College freshman is calling the LaQuinta Inn home this semester after dorms at Wiley filled up. "Most of the time we just go to practice, come back take showers and chill at the pool."

But, things aren't well for Charles Jackson. The hotels are overbooked just like the dorms, so he has no room. "The reason for me coming to college was to experience the college on campus. That's a reason to stay on campus," said Jackson.

Wiley College is housing more than 200 students in four local hotels and Texas State Technical College. "It's been a difficult challenge, as you might expect, especially for the students who are displaced. The college has a policy of attempting to make sure that every freshman resides on campus," said Joseph Morale.

More than 1,200 students are reporting to class, with many still registering. The college says it's working on the problem. "A long term solution is obviously to build our own facilities we are in the process of doing that," said Morale.

As frustration sets in, Jackson tries to make the best of his situation - will it be the hot tub or homework?

College isn't the only area college putting their students up in hotels. Lon Morris College in Jacksonville currently has students living in local hotels. The college reached its goal of 1,000 students this fall.
