TYLER (KYTX) - Educating our children is not just a job for school teachers. It's also up to our business leaders to teach children how to succeed.  CBS 19's ShaVonne Herndon reports on Longview's Adopt-A-School program, and how it's impacting a whole generation of children.

The city of Longview is matching businesses and schools, hoping to improve youth education through the program.

"Especially with school starting right now, it's a great opportunity to think, alright how can I help our community? How can I help Longview?" said Shawn Hara.

More than 100 East Texas businesses are committing their leaders to spend time at school teaching children the qualities it takes to succeed. Chuck King, a Chicfila store owner, challenges his adopted students to check themselves. "Through this curriculum every month there is a character trait that is emphasized and a curriculum that helps kids understand what those character traits are."

Character traits that include integrity and diligence. "We usually think that public education is just left to the school teachers. Business communities should also realize that for us to get quality workers we need to participate in the education of our future employees."

It's enriching the lives of students and helping to improve the society East Texans live in. "I don't think there's any better thing to invest in than the development of our kids through education," said King.

"It's a way for the school districts to work together to encourage people to get involved to help make the community better so we can all work together for a stronger Longview," said Hara.
