Survey conducted to count nation's homeless

Tyler (KYTX) - Volunteers across Smith County have wrapped up a survey to count the number of homeless.

Gateway to Hope teamed up with Texas Homeless Network and the National Alliance for Homelessness as part of a nationwide effort.

35 volunteers hit the streets and shelters to find out how many men, women and children are living without a roof over their heads, and what lead to their situation.

"Each year we gather the info so we can bring additional resources to our area.  The key is to learn enough about it to take action in a positive way," says Christina Fulsom, a steering committee member for Gateway to Hope.

Last year the survey found more than 300 homeless individuals in Smith County, 68 of them were children.

Fulsom says they will compile the data and have the numbers in about a week.
