TYLER (KYTX) -- Painters, sculptors and musicians are making the downtown square come alive for Tyler's ArtWalk.
Besides being a fun event for the community, these ArtWalks are held for several different reasons. They not only showcase local artists, but also downtown businesses.
Development and revitalization of the area has been a key initiative for the city of Tyler.
Salon Verve on Tyler's downtown square is a place for all kinds of art. "We really appreciate the arts and I also kind of look at us doing hair as a form of art, so we wanted to incorporate all of it into our salon," said owner Evette Tritt. She invites local artists to display their work, and the salon participates in Tyler's quarterly ArtWalks by hosting painters and even bands.
"We want to get involved in the downtown area and help it grow and really bring awareness to the arts."
"It brings people downtown to say oh yeah, look at all these restaurants, I didn't know they had that pilates studio, have you been to that gallery yet? You can't have people experience that until you bring them down for an event," said Beverly Abell of the city's Tyler Main Street department. She says promotion, including events like the ArtWalk, is one of the key components to revitalizing downtown.
"When all these things happen and people are investing in downtown, it just goes to show, this is legit and this is just the start."
The Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition just announced the city's first film festival will be held this fall. "It's going to put head in beds and generate hotel and motel tax in Tyler. It's going to bring people to visit our restaurants and bring people to visit our retail businesses."
That's encouraging for downtown business owners like Tritt. "We would really like to see the downtown area thrive in the arts district."
The film festival is planned for October and will coincide with the Rose Season.
