East Texas Food Bank gears up to feed thousands of kids this summer

TYLER (KYTX) - How will your kids be fed?

For many families, a lot of them unemployed that's not an easy question to answer.

The East Texas Food Bank is trying to prevent a nutrition crisis for children while they are out for the summer.

Schools coming to an end for summer, and thousands of East Texas kids will need breakfast and lunch.

That's where the East Texas Food Bank comes in, to provide meals and keep kids healthy.

Kids at the Greater Purpose Youth Center don't have to worry where their lunch will come from this summer.

"A lot of working parents and parents who's children will be at home who might not have nutritious foods," says Angela Warren, a busy mother of four.

Warren has her hands full.

"Have one job, trying to get another one," says Warren.

The center is teaming up with the East Texas Food Bank to provide breakfast and lunch.

Hot meals with fruits, vegetables, everything kids need who may not otherwise get it at home.

"Trying to pick up where school leaves off and keep those kids healthy and happy during the summer," says the Executive Director of the food bank, Dennis Cullinane.

Cullinane says they've added 12 sites across East Texas this year.

"The need is there, it's been stable. The economy has shown signs of being better and turning around, but really a lot of jobs haven't come back. We're just trying to catch up to the needs we're not filling," says Cullinane.

"Kids to be able to actually get a meal that's nutritious and just not snacks and sugar, something that's a good meal," says Kim Lee, a mother of two.

"It's a nice sized portion for them. They won't be over eating," says Warren.

A well-balanced meal, making well-balanced kids.

"I love it too," says Lee.

That rings true with parents working to keep their kids healthy.

"I do whatever I can for my girls," says Warren.

Now they aren't going to be serving the same thing everyday to these kids, it will change.

The East Texas Food Bank served more than 100,000 kids last year, and plan to serve even more this year.

The program kicks off Tuesday.
