We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

TYLER (KYTX) -- Like any East Texas, Lillian Clifton is trying to beat the heat. But that's far from Clifton's biggest problem. 20 years ago she suffered an aneurysm and a stroke. Now, she can't do normal things like drive or go to the grocery store on her own.

"I walk like a kid with a dirty diaper and I lose my balance a lot," Clifton said.

But Clifton is not alone. Dr. Kent Davis is the Medical Director for the Center for Healthy Aging at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He says a lack of transportation is a big problem for seniors like Clifton.

"Suddenly you can't do many social things. Go see your friends spontaneously, suddenly you can't go shopping on your own."

Medicab owner Jamal Moherer knows Clifton. She has been calling on his business to get her to and from her doctor's office since 1991. One of several options available to her and others like her.

"The city of Tyler provides fixed routes service that senior citizens or people with disabilities can also use. There is also Go Bus, that is East Texas Council of Governments. And many faith based organizations.

Although Clifton can't do a lot of the things she used to, she's determined to stay on her feet until she has no other choice.

"As long as I can do as little bit as I can do, I want to."
