Falls often result in more problems for seniors'

TYLER-(KYTX) Muriel Resner visits the Senior Citizens Center in Tyler five days a week. She goes to workout, spend time with friends, and play one of her favorite games, Rummikube.

Resner plays with her left hand, but she's right handed. That's because two years ago, Resner fell and broke her right hand and hip.

"When I came home from the hospital I could barely stand up," Resner said.

Resner spent 24 days in the hospital but her recovery was far from over. She underwent two more months of physical therapy before she was able to get out on her own.

Encompass Home Health in Tyler offers physical therapy for seniors like Resner. Christine Knight works with physicians to educate them on what Encompass can offer patients. Knight said the most common injury in someone over the age of 65 is a fall which often results in fractures.

"We hear about broken hips all the time. Spine is very common, the pelvis. And also the arms and the hands. And the ankles as well," Knight said.

Knight added that healthy activity goes a long way in keeping a senior safe from injury.

"There isn't a giant translation between sitting in your chair and exercising as there is doing weight bearing exercises. So whether that's standing and walking or actually using low weights. That helps prevent osteoporosis. That also helps with your balance in addition to muscle strengthening," Knight said.

Resner's exercise has kept her strong and even though her hand isn't 100 percent, she doesn't plan on giving up Rummikube anytime soon.

"I'm trying to be as careful as I can and I haven't fallen since then. So I guess I'm lucky," she said.
