Tyler - (KYTX) As temperatures go from hot to unbearable, families living without air conditioning are finding it hard to stay cool.
Tyler Resident Kanesha McCowan said she's doing what she can to keep her kids comfortable.
"My babies sweat every night," McCowan said. "We have to get in the pool and play in the water before we go to sleep to keep cool."
Monday her family went to People Attempting to Help (PATH). They picked up food and a much needed fan, hoping it will blow in some relief.
"Big fan, we need that," Terrill Middleton said."I almost passed out last night."
Fans have been flying off the shelves at PATH. In fact, the agency has given away 500 this summer.
"We're finding we're in the middle of June and we've already given way half of what we had for the entire summer," PATH Executive Dir. Christina Fulsom said. So, Fulsom is asking the community for money for fans.
"It can cool people by 3 to 4 degrees," she said.
She's also asking for gas money to help buy bus passes and tanks of gas for the needy.
"This is the first time we are making a concerted effort and going to the community and saying because of the cost of gas we need your help," Fulsom said.
Middleton said gas prices are the reason his family lives without air conditioning He just lost his job and can't afford to keep the air conditioner on and the gas tank full. "The main thing is trying to save our money to go job hunting," he said.
"We want to make sure people keep their jobs and they're able to get the help they need," Fulsom said.
Help that goes a long way for families trying to beat a slow economy and the Texas heat.
