MARSHALL (KYTX) - Teachers out of work are getting their jobs back at an East Texas school district, even though big budget cuts are expected next year. As CBS 19's Abby Broyles explains, Marshall ISD is already rehiring employees.
The past 7 weeks have been a waiting game for Mark Randolf. His job as an assistant athletic director was eliminated in April, and he's been looking for work.
"At my age, it's hard to get a job - in any field, not just in education," Randolf said.
He and 15 other employees at Marshall ISD were let go due to looming budget cuts.
But now, Coach Randolf is one of a dozen employees who've been rehired by the district. Most of those are new positions, and administrators say they'll be funded by federal grants.
"It's $2.5 million for next year and hopefully for several years after that," Superintendent Bruce Gearing said.
"We're trying really diligently to give as many of those people we let go positions back in the district," Gearing says. "Several of them are not doing what they were doing before, but they at least have work at the district."
Coach Randolf is one of them. He'll be back in the classroom as a teacher and out on the field as a football coach.
"I find that after 30 years, what I do is coach and teach. So it'll be good to be back on the field. That's what I've done, worked with kids, done it all my life, and that's where I'm most comfortable," Randolf said.
He's looking forward to the new school year and, hopefully, many school years to come.
