EASTON (KYTX) - People in the town of Easton are trying to figure out what they'll do once their post office shuts down. The U.S. Postal Service says it doesn't make sense financially to keep it open in a town of 525 people. As CBS 19's Abby Broyles explains, people call it a major loss for their community.
The U.S. Postal Service will shut down the Easton post office, unless residents like Thomas Norris have their way.
"Keep the Easton Post Office open," Norris said.
Annie Ward is 86 years old. She stopped driving a few years ago, and she walks to the post office to pick up her mail every day.
She says, "I've been walking there for years."
The USPS says it'll save about $30,000 a year by closing the post office in Easton. No official word on when that will happen, but when it does, about 150 people in this town will lose their P.O. boxes. They'll have to drive to either Tatum or Longview, or put up a mailbox at their own expense.
"It's just so convenient for our people here to use this post office, and we'd like to see it stay," Easton Mayor Walter Ward said.
Mayor Ward knows that closing the post office would be a major loss for his community.
"Since I've been here in Easton since '62, we have always had a post office," Ward says. "It's kind of a historical marker for us, having a post office here that long."
A rural delivery carrier from Longview will deliver the mail to homes with mailboxes. Others will have to reopen a P.O. Box at the post office in Tatum 10 minutes away. But with fewer than a dozen boxes left there, most will have to go to the Longview post office - a 30 minute drive.
"We'd just like to keep our post office, keep everybody happy," Ward said.
One postal worker is currently employed at the Easton post office. No word whether she'll be placed elsewhere or not. If you live in Easton and need to get a new post office box, contact the Longview post office at (903) 753-3683.
