East Texans joining tar sands pipeline tour

(KYTX) - We've been following this story for months now about Trans-Canada's proposed Keystone XL, which would pipe so-called "tar sands" from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

The pipeline will run right under 23 different Smith County roads. Now, some frustrated people from across the country, including here in East Texas, are taking their frustrations to Washington D.C.

They're fired up ready to make their voices heard. This group of East tTexans along with others from across the country are protesting against the proposed keystone xl pipeline.

"This is going to affect us all in a very negative way if we don't do something to stop it," said Kendal Martell.

Sunday morning, Kendal Martell will travel the route of the pipeline from Texas to Nebraska for 10 days with other concerned landowners.

"We're trying to send a message to the president that he has our support in making the smart decision to not approve this dangerous pipeline," said David Daniel.

The pipeline tour will eventually end in Washington D.C. where this group will join thousands in protest.

"We're here representing East Texas...people from all different ages, background, political affiliations....it's really good to see," said Martell.

Within the next four months, the U.S. State Department will decide whether to approve the keystone xl pipeline.

"The state department says this pipeline can spill 1.7 million gallons a day without a triggering system. This is a huge threat to our water especially right now in Texas that we're going through such a severe drought," said Daniel.

That's why this dedicated group is taking their message to the streets.

"Our democracy is going to happen, only if we fight for it," said Martell.

We're told more than 50 people were arrested this morning in Washington, D.C. In front of the White House for protesting against the pipeline.
