Fit City Success: From Austin to Boston

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- Chelsea Nooney's dream to run a marathon started about two and a half years ago when she got back into running. But at that time, she had no idea the Boston Marathon would be in her future.

"The training was pretty hard," she said. "I actually trained here at Rose Rudman in Tyler."

For four months, Nooney pounded this pavement six to seven days a week. She was training for the Austin, not Boston Marathon at the time.

"It was on my bucket list of things to do in my life," she said.

Running wasn't new to Nooney. She said health and fitness is a way of life to her. She mastered in health education at school and now works for a health coaching company.

That helped lay the ground-work for her first marathon.

"The full marathon was amazing," she said. "There were over 20,000 runners. There were people on the sidelines cheering for you. It was really emotional. The hard work definitely paid off during the race."

When she started the race, Nooney said she had one thing on her mind -- finishing. But something changed after the first mile.

"I was like 'I want to qualify for Boston,'" she said. "It depends on age, gender and time. I finished eight and half minutes faster than the qualifying time for my age range."

Now, Nooney's back on the training track at Rose Rudman. She just completed the Tyler Half Marathon and is well on her way to taking on 26.2 miles of Boston she never dreamed possible.

"It just goes to show, no matter where you are living, what stage of life you are in, you can train if you really want it," she said. "You can achieve it."

This time, Nooney said her goal is to solely complete the race, but if history is any indicator she'll be running tough right alongside 20,000 other runners.
