J.B.'s Journal: Rin Tin Tin

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) -- Rin Tin Tin is considered the most recognized name in the history of the German Shepherd. The original puppy was discovered in France during the first World War and eventually became a Hollywood star.

Raised with Rin Tin Tin, Daphne Hereford of Crockett continues to preserve his legacy.

"I took care of the kennel," she said. "I grew up in the kennel. We had a kennel full of Rin dogs, so that was just our dog."

Rinty was an exceptional jumper and landed his first movie role in "Man From Hell's River" when he completed a scene in one take.

"Rin Tin Tin became one of the biggest stars during the 20's in Hollywood," she said. "The Bees Knees for me was Lassie."

Rin made 26 movies and died in 1932. Daphne's grandmother was approached by Duncan, to preserve the legacy. And in 1988, Daphne took over. She even holds on to the official Rin Tin Tin ring.

"One gold one exists and that's this one," she said.

Xandu is also one of the original pieces of the legacy of Rin Tin Tin.

"Her name is Xandu, she was born in 1980," Daphne said. "People sometimes say because the line is so old the original dogs not there anymore. She's an identical replica of the original dog."

German Shepherds like Cross are an important part of the criminal justice system; they can find illegal drugs, catch criminals and locate lost kids. Even some of Rin Tin Tin's offspring have been used by law enforcement.

"Back in the 60's, my grandmother donated the majority of the dogs to the Houston police department," Daphne said. She said her grandchildren enjoy playing with the newest Rin. The puppy's brother is in training to become Rin Tin Tin No. 14.

"I'm amazed that I'm one of the few in the world who have a Rin Tin Tin dog and that I get to carry it on," owner and breeder of Rin Tin Tin Dorothy Yanchak said.

A dream and dedication that will continue with her family.

"There will always be a Rin Tin Tin," Daphne said.

For CBS 19, I'm Sheriff J.B. Smith, and that's my story.

The Rin Tin Tin line of German Shepherds is considered the oldest continuous blood line in the history of the breed. Rin continues to make appearances and recently rang the bell for the New York Stock Exchange and received an award in Hollywood.
