CENTERVILLE (KBTX) -- Several horses on a local ranch appear to be starving, and it's something nearby residents say they're not going to put up with.
The horses are located on a ranch off of County Road 1464 near Centerville.
"When I go to bed, I think about them, and when I wake up I think if they are okay. It's just really upsetting," said Pam Varnell who helps feed the horses.
Several neighbors, that live near the property, have turned into caretakers for the past month. They have pets of their own but, after seeing these animals, they say they have assumed the role of being guardians making sure these horses survive.
"It haunts me at night to see or to think of them suffering. They are alone, it's dark. Sometimes I know there's not been water, I know there has not been very much to eat," said Jane Sullivan who makes sure she brings hay and bags of horse feed everyday. "Where do we cut the line? Are we going to cut back on our horses care to help these horses that may not even make it? I don't know. We talk about it every single day."
Giving up on this group isn't an option.
"We are going to go door to door everyday to try to get a little bit of money here and there because everybody feels the same way about these animals," said Sullivan.
The new-found feeders leave the empty grain bags at the mailbox on the property, hoping to send a message for the owner to deliver the necessities.
We did eventually get in touch with the owner of the property. He says he lives out of town and visits the property every week. He gives the horses food and water and says that some of his horses are sick and currently being treated.
We are in contact with the Leon County Sheriff's Office, but so far authorities are not commenting about this story.
