Fit City Success: From overweight to personal trainer

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- Lacey Lafayette's journey to weight loss started when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition.

Faced with the possibility of not seeing her baby grow up she decided to change what she put into her body and got moving.

"I was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and I went into congestive heart failure after the birth of my child," she said.

Lafayette's doctor told her, if she wanted to live, she had to lose the pounds that had been weighing her down from college into pregnancy.

"He told me about low fat and low sodium and that's where I started," she said.

Lafayette also started exploring clean eating; whole foods in their natural state.

She also practices portion control and eating smaller meals more often.

"Then it translated into slowly exercising and taking walks," she said. "And then I took an aerobics class, then I wanted more."

So she started boot camp and even became a personal trainer and now she spends at least five days a week in her home gym.

"I do really intense workouts," she said. "Those are my favorites. I think if I am not sweating and my heart is not racing I don't feel like I have done any good."
But Lafayette's fit city success didn't happen overnight. It took her two years to work-off the weight.

"When you start losing 10, 20, 30 pounds and the first medication goes away, you don't have to take that any longer," she said. "I knew I was doing something right and it just kept me going. Before I knew it I was about 50-75 pounds in. I was off everything."

Lafayette's personal success is one of the reasons she became a personal trainer: to help others get healthy.

"Baby steps," she said. "Just change one thing at a time and it will all fall together. Start with your diet and slowly start walking and eventually you will build up and get there."

Lafayette said you don't have to sacrifice the foods you love to eat either. Instead of having her favorite meal once a week, she indulges about once a month.
