ETMC dedicates new trauma center in Tyler

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- The East Texas Medical Center unveiled a new emergency room Tuesday designed to help patients faster and make them more comfortable in the process.

The re-modeled Elmer G. Ellis Trauma Center has three trauma rooms designed with most of the major equipment hanging from the ceiling. That lets doctors go where they need to without obstacles.

For less urgent cases, the hospital has done away with double rooms so every patient has complete privacy for everything from consultations to procedures.

"People come to us for a reason and we want to make sure we provide the best care possible," Director of Emergency Services Sheryl Murphy said. "Part of that is being very efficient."

"It's a beautiful thing to watch the kind of care and service they deliver when someone who had no expectations of needing that service arrives," Ellis said. The center was named for him because of his efforts to secure a Level 1 designation for ETMC's Tyler trauma operation.

The hospital expects its new facility to improve its survival rate for trauma patients, which already leads the nation. They say it should last without major updates for several decades.

The renovations were made possible by a $1 million donation from the Robert M. Rogers Foundation.
