Fit City Success: Challenge winner takes exercising one day at a time

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- "We have a walker we are going to recognize...Susan Schaffer!"

Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass said Schaffer's fitwalk challenge card showed she was very diligent about exercise.

"She exercised anywhere from one to two hours a day..."

A routine, Schaffer's been committed to since she moved to Tyler 25 years ago. When it's not raining, you'll find her walking at Rose Rudman or in her neighborhood.

"I particularly like walking outside," she said. "I like to see the animals, birds and trees. Walking and seeing other people walking and riding their bicycles makes me feel much better. It's kind of an energy release."

But never did she imagine that she would walk away with the top prize after joining the Fit Walk Challenge.

"It's a shock," she said. "I didn't even know what a Wii system was. when I called my son in Colorado to tell him I won, he said 'that's great mom'"

Schaffer plans on figuring out her new Wii Fit and putting it to good use.

"I thought, 'this is exactly what I need,'" she said. "When it's raining I don't like driving to the mall when it is slick out, but that's my main place to walk when it is raining."

Now Schaffer can just turn on her Wii Fit and keep on track to fit city success, even on a rainy day.

Bass said she plans to launch another challenge in the spring.
