Fill The Banks kicks off

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- Play time with her twins almost didn't happen for Amanda Davis of Van.

"The doctor did tell my husband that they almost lost me," she said.

While she was delivering her now 15 month olds babies something went wrong.

"I was rushed into emergency surgery for a C-section and during that time what you would consider to be a normal C-section pregnancy I started hemorrhaging," she said. "I  had to receive 6 units of blood."

Blood from the Carter BloodCare Center that she says saved her life.

"People think that blood banks have blood all the time and you know something like a pregnancy that could be normal at one minute can turn devastating the next. That blood has to be there if that blood's not there somebody could lose their life."

Its why she's encouraging people to donate to Fill the Banks, an annual blood and food drive supporting Carter BloodCare and the East Texas Food Bank.

Each pint of blood donated, Carter BloodCare says, saves three lives.

"It saved my life," Davis said.

At St. Paul's Food Pantry in Tyler, a different kind of donation is helping Yvonda Gilliam.

"I got some flour, some peaches, some chicken," she said. "It's a blessing and I imagine it's a blessing for everyone who comes here because if it wasn't for them I don't think I could make it."

She's getting her weekly groceries. She says she'd have to go without if the food pantry didn't exist.

"It's real helpful because I can't afford groceries," she said.

The pantry relies on the East Texas Food Bank to stock its shelves each week. The Food Bank helps nearly 68,000 people in Smith County each year.

"We need the help because the way the economy is. We just need the help," she said.

Two women who's lives are touched by two different agencies with a common goal.
