Fit City Success: Lindale ISD program keeps kids on their feet

Posted: Updated:

LINDALE (KYTX) -- Twice a week, for 6 weeks, these students at E.J. Moss Intermediate School in Lindale choose to stay at school for a dose of health. But instead of hitting the books, they are hitting the gym.

"We are just hoping it is going to be a lifestyle for them," Anytime Fitness in Lindale Owner Richard Aubuchon said. "So they won't fall into any of the problems of obesity and diabetes."

Anytime Fitness, which already partners with the district for employees and teachers, wanted to help by providing two degreed instructors.

"What we are really trying to instill, in a small way, is even if you're playing a video game try doing it standing up," Aubuchon said. "Just small increments of saying sitting down is probably not going to help your body get through life."

"The basic philosophy of this partnership between LISD and Anytime Fitness is to establish healthy behaviors early on in children so they don't have to struggle to change unhealthy behaviors as adults," Assistant Superintendent of Special Programs Carolyn Todd said.

"If you're at home you can walk your dog," fourth grader Ty Green said. "You don't have to be a sports player."

But it does help to show kids that exercising can be fun. Something as simple as dribbling a basketball, doing bear-crawls across the floor or jumping rope can burn calories.

"I thought it was hard and labor and not fun," fourth grader Yancey Walker said. "But it's fun. Trust me."

The students say the Eagles Soar Program has taught them to be more active and healthy once they leave school.

"you can stay active, learn to make good choices not bad on our food and you can get in shape," sixth grader Alexia Williams said. "It's easy, all it takes is an hour or two."

Lindale ISD is now hoping the buzz about how much students enjoy the after school fitness program will help it grow to other campuses.
