Palestine couple married for 75 years

PALESTINE (KYTX) -- Lela and Virgil Harris are living proof that love is truly unbreakable.

"We've been married 75 years today," they said. "There's not many people that make it that long. Either they die or something so we're lucky that we've lived 75 years together."

They met in November of 1936. Lela worked down the street from Virgil.

"She was a beauty," he said.

"Ha, he was the beauty," she said.

And as Lela says, the rest was history.

"Finally one of our sisters called attention that there's a good looking boy down there," Lela said. "So I got him."

It was only two months after they met that they tied the knot. Lela was 20 and Virgil was 21.

"We just fell in love! Well at least I did, did you," Virgil said to Lela.

"He always says that," she said.

They said they both can't imagine life without each other. And even though they're both close to 100 years old, Lela 96 and Virgil 97, they're still active with the Palestine community they've lived in all their lives. Both are still involved with their church, and both members of the Masonic Lodge.

"I guess that's what keeps us going, we try to be a part of the community and part of the state, whatever it is, keep ourselves busy."

Lela and Virgil have three children, five grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
