Consumer Corner: Carnival could lose hundreds of millions

Posted: Updated:

(CNN/CBS) - Carnival Corp. is blaming the fatal accident of a cruise ship off the coast of Italy earlier this month for its losses.  Carnival is now forecasting a loss, in the range of $375 million to $395 million for 2012.

Carnival's stock has dropped about 7% since the crash.  It was down 1% in Monday trading.  In contrast, shares of the company's rival, Royal Caribbean Cruises, have jumped 9% over the past month.

Spirit Airlines is blasting a new rule requiring airlines to include government taxes and fees in their advertised price.  Before, airlines frequently advertised low base fares on online sites and added taxes and fees later in the shopping process.

Spirit has now configured its website with a big "Warning!" pop-up sign.  It then says, "New government regulations require us to hide taxes in your fares. This is not consumer friendly or in your best interest.it's wrong and you shouldn't stand for it."  The Department of Transportation calls the ad campaign "misguided and disingenuous."

If you lose your job in Florida, chances are you won't find another one any time soon.  The Sunshine State has the highest rate of long-term unemployment in the nation.

Some 53% of jobless Floridians were out of work for more than six months in 2011.  Many of those unemployed residents will cast their vote Tuesday in the state's republican presidential primary.
