(CBS/CNN) - More than one in three Americans lived in a home that received Medicaid, food stamps or other government assistance, according to a new report.

Analysts at George Washington University found when Social Security, Medicare and unemployment benefits are included, nearly half of the nation lived in a household that received a government check.  That's more than 148 million Americans.  Those numbers are on their way up thanks to the great recession and its aftermath, which have pushed record numbers of people onto public assistance programs.

More than 40 states have agreed to a nationwide settlement over foreclosure practices. Federal and state leaders have been in discussions with the nation's five biggest banks for nearly a year.  They include Bank of America, Wells Fargo, J.P. Morgan Chase, Citigroup and Ally Financial.

The deal would force the lenders to reduce loans for one-million households behind on their payments and "underwater" on their mortgages.  The money available to homeowners could run has high as $25 billion dollars if all 50 states approve the deal.

Eli manning is expected to cash-in on his second Super Bowl win.  The Giants' quarterback earned 7 million dollars in endorsement deals last year.  Now, advertising experts say he can easily double that amount this year.

And McDonald's is apologizing and pulling an ad that claimed eating a Chicken McBite was less risky than petting a stray pit bull, shaving your head, or giving friends your Facebook password.

Many pit bull owners and their supporters were offended by the radio advertisement.  The ad ran only a few days.
