Web Exclusive: Pit Bull saves family from fire

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - A two-year-old pit bull named Moo-Moo is being hailed a hero.  The dog woke its owner up just in time to escape a house fire.

Inside the animal welfare league in Chicago Ridge, Diane Walker waited to take her four legged hero home.  "Moo-Moo is a great dog, moo-moo's a great dog," says Diane Walker.

Moo-Moo, a 2-year-old American Pit Bull, just last week, an electrical fire sparked inside of Diane's home on Chicago's south side.  "It was about 4:30 in the morning, we were all sleeping," says Walker.  Moo-Moo jumped into action.

"She pushed my door open, got on my bed and started licking me and I was wondering what she was doing," says Josiah Walker.  "And I was asking her 'Moo-Moo what are you doing? What are you doing?"  He woke up Diane's grandson Josiah who smelled the smoke.  "I heard him screaming you know Fire, Fire, Fire, we all jumped up and ran outside," says Walker.

Everyone except Moo-Moo, who could not be found through the smoke and the heat.  Diane's son Dwayne rushed back in, three different times.  "But, it was so overwhelming that he couldn't get back upstairs," says Walker.  He finally found her, got her out and then got oxygen from the paramedics.  "Called around to other places to bring her in for help, no one would help," says Walker.

It was the Animal Welfare League who ended up taking in Moo-Moo free of charge.  "I didn't have to worry about anything after that," says Walker.  The League got her back on 4-legs for the family who lost their home, but not their hero.  "She's a wonderful dog and she saved us.  She saved us," says Walker.
