Parents learn about future UT Tyler charter school

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Elementary and middle school students will soon get to access UT Tyler's resources.

The university is opening a charter school in August for grades 3 to 6. Each year after that, it will add a new grade until the school is 3 - 12 grades.

The school will focus on project based creative learning, using technology. It will be similar to a private school, but costs nothing to attend.

The school will focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

Eli Crow is helping establish the new school and says, "We're a one to one school with the technology and we are really driving this idea of project based learning."

Parent and former teacher Tracy Coffey went to a meeting Monday night to find out more about the school. Coffey says she's impressed with the creativity the school will allow.

"The things they're going to have are hands on, some parents can't get their hands on. I like the group effort and things like that," Coffey says.

The next meeting about the charter school will be on March 5.
