Web Exclusive: Boyfriend gives gift of life for Valentine's

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Plenty of men will give the women in their life flowers, candy, maybe even jewelry.
But a Chicago man gave his girlfriend a gift he hopes will help save her life, a new kidney.

Terry Lee spent Valentine's Day in the hospital, but he wasn't alone. His girlfriend, Latrisha Beckwith, is at his side. "When we met, we hit it off real smooth, it was. like hitting on all cylinders," Terry Lee.

After a five-month whirlwind romance, fate took a turn and brought them both here to Vanderbilt Medical Center.  "I wanted to be with her, and I wanted her to have a normal life," says Lee.

Latrisha has lupus and needed a kidney. None of her family members were a match, Terry insisted on getting tested.  "It wasn't a hard decision at all."  He, of course, is her perfect match.  "Even though I knew he was O-positive, for some reason it didn't register that things would work out because it was too perfect," says Latrisha Beckwith.

You can pretty much guess how the story goes from here. A few more doctors' visits and more tests.  "You know, inquire about it and kind of do a little YouTube research," says Lee.  Then, time to pick the transplant date. "December was booked. January was pretty much booked, February was wide open," says Beckwith.  And what better day to give and receive the ultimate gift of love, than on Valentine's Day?

"This is stuff that you hear about in books and in movies, but it doesn't seem like real life," says Beckwith.  Latrisha's knight in shining armor is dressed in a hospital gown.  "I wanna help, I wanna help," says Lee, to give their love story a fairytale ending.

"I'm happy and I'm grateful, and I feel like our paths were supposed to cross and this is why," says Beckwith.  Latrisha and Terry will spend the next two weeks in Tennessee, recovering and getting check-ups.
