(CNN) - Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is expected to be named chairman of the Democratic National Convention.

Democratic sources say a formal announcement will be made today. The news was first reported by the Los Angeles Times. The convention is scheduled for the first week of September when President Obama will formally accept the Democratic presidential nomination for his re-election bid.

It will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina.
