(KYTX) Tyler -- The city hopes to fix about 50 of the cities oldest roads. The majority of those roads are in the north and west sections. People who live their say the improvements are a long time coming.

"Well I've been here about 50 years and I've never seen these roads re-paved before," Tyler resident Doris Young said.

For 50 years Young has driven over cracks, potholes and patching to get to her north Tyler home.

"It's kinda bumpy a lot of places real bumpy," she said.

But the ride is about to get smoother.

"Good news I'm glad to here it," she said. "We need it bad."

Englewood Drive is one of 51 streets on a list to get re-paved this year. The city will use $2 million in half-cent sales tax money to re-pave the roadways.

"We've evaluated all the streets with a Pavement Condition Index rating of 55 and below," City Engineer Carter Delleney said. A PCI rating is a pavement condition index that a computer program creates with a score of 100 being the highest. The new software looks at a list of facts about each street and then rates them.

Alligator cracking, utility cuts and patching are few of the factors considered. Delleney said the city hopes to re-pave 46 lane miles.

The city wants to edge mill all the roads in the city with curb and gutter.

"So if there's curb and gutter on the street we are going to go in and edge mill that street so the new asphalt and the panel of the gutter meet up," Delleney said. "So people can get to their driveways without bottoming out and also it looks a lot nicer."

Young can't wait for the project to start.

"I think it will make the neighborhood look better and make the drive more smooth on the street."

The city said repairs will begin later this year.
