New program provides healthy meal for seniors

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- It's called the Senior Box Program and its goal is to provide a free box of nutritious food to low income seniors who may have little or no access to food assistance.

The East Texas Food Bank was filled with volunteers packing up boxes of food for about 100 seniors in Quitman. The boxes contain food items that are nutritious and easy to prepare.

Organizers are trying to reach 19,000 seniors in rural areas of East Texas who may need extra food to help them get through the month.

In East Texas, one in seven seniors are at risk of hunger, which means some seniors may go without something to eat in order to pay for other necessities in their life.

"Our population is continuing to age," Director of the East Texas Food Bank Dennis Cullinane said. "So that population is actually growing and the need is actually growing in that particular segment. As I said, as folks reach the age of 60 and are eligible for SS benefits, they're not able to get income they need to provide them with a nutritious diet."

Seniors can still sign up for this program.

If you're senior who is receiving disability, food stamps or medicaid and older than the age of 60, you automatically qualify.

Just contact the East Texas Food Bank and they will put your name on the list.
